Ken and his team are inspired by the cyclical patterns and intricate compositions of the natural world. They thrive on spontaneity, and the spirit of experimentation made possible by fearlessness to create truly innovate installations for both private and corporate clients. Ken began working with ceramics, because of its unique properties and versatile applications. Since then, he has branched out beyond ceramics, to explore the possibilities found within wood, steel, glass, and composite resins. His installations and sculptural works can be found in the world’s most prestigious hotels and restaurants from New York, Doha, San Diego, Athens and Toronto to Hong Kong.

Synthesis X

Tom Price Contact Studio

Synthesis is the study of a dialogue between two contrasting materials – resin and tar – and their negotiation for space and identity when forced to become a single unified entity.

What appear to be petal-like inclusions are actually cracks and fissures created through a careful manipulation of the catalysing process of the resin. They cluster around and interact with amorphous invasive bodies of tar, which loom – apparently suspended in space. The tar initially appears densely black, almost light-absorbent, but upon closer inspection, a network of fine green vapour trails can be seen drifting from a surface partially melted by the exothermic reaction of the curing resin. As the tar heats it expands searching for pathways within the resin and rushes to claim opening cavities, creating wafer thin golden slivers of coral-like protuberances.

The effects of the synthesis of these two disparate elements – one black and dense; the other clear and liquid – results in a riot of colour and explosive formations that engage on both a macro and micro level.

Nobu, Doha, Qatar

Ken Gangbar Contact Studio

Ken decided to create an immersive, dynamic installation/ On an 1981 cm x 366cm backdrop behind Doha’s spiral staircase, curved pieces of suspended porcelain seem to float, as if defying the laws of gravity. Some of the pieces are enhanced with geometric patterns of gold, causing bright flashes as they catch the light. The effect is striking, the perfect complement to the visual splendour already on display.

Contour Hybrid Brass

Topography and geometry meet in these dream-like maps. Imaginary rivers and valleys cut through the strata of cold cast bronze and solid acrylic. The absence of colour enhances the smooth chiselled finish to create a powerful homage to natural structures. These hand made works are unlike machine polished marble, they are more organic looking with some area’s more matt and some more reflective. This natural aesthetic is what makes up their appeal.

Standard size 120 x 120cm made to order with a 4-8 week lead time.

Residence, Palo Alto, USA

Ken Gangbar Contact Studio

After seeing Ken’s work in the lobby of the Palomar Hotel in San Diego, the owner of this home in Palo Alto approached Ken and his team to create a personal installation.
With total creative freedom, Ken looked to nature for inspiration and found it in the soft curves and ephemeral character of wild spores. We began by crafting 350 porcelain orbs. Then, we arranged them in an intentionally random fashion. The cumulative effect of the imperfect, round shapes and their unique placement served to offset the strong geometric lines of the home, creating a fascinating study in contrast. And the client was so pleased with the results she forgave us for knocking holes in her wall.

We’ve always found that the circular form meshes fluidly with contemporary design. With that in mind, each porcelain piece was placed with precision and intent along a 60 foot canvas. Ken and his team love to juxtapose modern settings with organic shapes and elements, and the deliberately loose grouping seamlessly achieves this effect. The cumulative effect breaks through any dichotomy, seamlessly insinuating itself into the elegant setting.

Grand Hyatt, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Ken Gangbar Contact Studio

For the Royal Suite of the Grand Hyatt hotel, Ken created this unique white marble and ceramic installation Constructed from hundreds of individual fin-like pieces, it is almost mosaic in appearance, with the smooth white marble standing in sharp contrast to the rough, grooved surface of the dark porcelain. Combining themes of light, shadow, and contrasting textures, this piece reflects themes that continue to intrigue us.

Carbon Bench

Tom Price Contact Studio

Inspiration for the Carbon bench came from a commission by the Duke of Devonshire for Chatsworth House. Made by casting ground coal into a mould, it references the 18th Century coal tunnel mines owned by the Devonshire family.

The Carbon Bench is part of a body of work collectively referred to as the Carbon Series. It explores the notion of carbon as the fundamental building block of all living things in the universe – what connects us in a material sense to other living beings and the world around us, and what we ultimately return to.

Counterpart

Tom Price Contact Studio

Counterpart was commissioned as a functional work of art by the Duke of Devonshire. It was requested that the sculpture should respond in some way to the history of the Devonshire family and Chatsworth House. It comprises two contrasting blocks: one dark and light-absorbing; the other translucent and crystalline. The dark block is made from coal and references the 18th Century coal tunnel mines owned by the Devonshire family. The glowing transparent block, made from resin, evokes the extensive mineral collection begun by Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire in the 18th Century.

The installation is also a study of the material relationship between artworks on display throughout the house and the plinths upon which they sit. Throughout the house a fascinating interplay between nature and artifice is evident everywhere from a beautifully veined stone lintel to an intricately carved wooden frame bordering a trompe l’oeils depiction of nature. Each is magnificent in its own right. At times the natural splendour of a marble plinth will completely eclipse the sculpture it was built to support, bringing into question the true value of materials compared to what is made from them. Counterpart celebrates this blurring of nature, craft and art through the mix of natural and synthetic materials, and production process that are as much laboriously hand crafted as they are influenced by chance.

Humanity Gold

Petr Weigl Contact Studio

Humanity is essentially the same, give or take a few degrees of separation and our own personal kinks and twists. We share the same needs, desires and basic concerns whatever our colour, creed or culture. Homage to the craft of ceramics, this series ponders the infinite variations and random differences that occur through the ceramic creation process. Even though each individual tile, like ourselves is unique, the question remains: are we really so different from one another!

Material: Bone-china, glaze, gold lustre matt and reflective & thread on aluminium board, set in an aluminium tray frame.

Standard size 102 x 102cm made to order with a 4-8 week lead time.

Synthesis V

Tom Price Contact Studio

Synthesis V is a wall-mounted illuminated sculpture. It is designed to be installed in the corner of a room with 90 degree walls. Inspiration for this piece came from the artist observing a shaft of sunlight creeping across the corner of a room, which is why Synthesis V is set at an angle as it approaches the corner.  The resin is illuminated by high quality LED strip lights, which emit very little heat and have very low power consumption. It is also possible to add a dimming module to control the level of light.

Synthesis is the study of a dialogue between two contrasting materials – resin and tar – and their negotiation for space and identity when forced to become a single unified entity.

Petal-like cracks and fissures formed through a careful manipulation of the catalysing process of the resin cluster and interact with amorphous invasive bodies of tar, which loom – apparently suspended in space. The tar initially appears densely black, almost light-absorbent, but upon closer inspection, a network of fine green vapour trails can be seen drifting from a surface partially melted by the exothermic reaction of the curing resin. As the tar heats it expands, searching for pathways within the resin and rushes to claim open fissures, creating wafer thin golden slivers of coral-like protuberances.
