Counterpart was commissioned as a functional work of art by the Duke of Devonshire. It was requested that the sculpture should respond in some way to the history of the Devonshire family and Chatsworth House. It comprises two contrasting blocks: one dark and light-absorbing; the other translucent and crystalline. The dark block is made from coal and references the 18th Century coal tunnel mines owned by the Devonshire family. The glowing transparent block, made from resin, evokes the extensive mineral collection begun by Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire in the 18th Century.

The installation is also a study of the material relationship between artworks on display throughout the house and the plinths upon which they sit. Throughout the house a fascinating interplay between nature and artifice is evident everywhere from a beautifully veined stone lintel to an intricately carved wooden frame bordering a trompe l’oeils depiction of nature. Each is magnificent in its own right. At times the natural splendour of a marble plinth will completely eclipse the sculpture it was built to support, bringing into question the true value of materials compared to what is made from them. Counterpart celebrates this blurring of nature, craft and art through the mix of natural and synthetic materials, and production process that are as much laboriously hand crafted as they are influenced by chance.

Stripes Spectrum II

Rose Long Contact Studio

Rose Long’s ‘Stripes’ series of paintings derives from a need to expose oil paints for the viscous, sensual, seamless, oozy, malleable and yet forgiving medium that it is.

In this series she examines tonal combinations or color together with the texture, form, edge, shadow and layering of paint on canvas to emphasise the convening of the boundaries of paint, air and canvas.

As an architect Rose is used to working with different drawing tools to create structure in space. Similarly with these paintings, the use of tools is paramount – tape; straight edge; set square; palette knife; brushes, scribes and plumbs are all used to apply paint with differing results.

Standard size 100 x 60cm made to order with a 12-16 week lead time.

Synthesis L2

Tom Price £19,200

Synthesis is the study of a dialogue between two contrasting materials – resin and tar – and their negotiation for space and identity when forced to become a single unified entity.

What appear to be petal-like inclusions are actually cracks and fissures created through a careful manipulation of the catalysing process of the resin. They cluster around and interact with amorphous invasive bodies of tar, which loom – apparently suspended in space. The tar initially appears densely black, almost light-absorbent, but upon closer inspection, a network of fine green vapour trails can be seen drifting from a surface partially melted by the exothermic reaction of the curing resin. As the tar heats it expands searching for pathways within the resin and rushes to claim opening cavities, creating wafer thin golden slivers of coral-like protuberances.

The effects of the synthesis of these two disparate elements – one black and dense; the other clear and liquid – results in a riot of colour and explosive formations that engage on both a macro and micro level.
